Madison’s Reporter: Slight Increase in Demand Not Enough to Raise Lumber Prices

Most S-P-F lumber and stud suppliers reported improving inquiry. Demand for panels circled the drain, while Southern Pine sales couldn’t get off the mat.

In the week ending May 10, 2024, the price of Western S-P-F 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$383 mfbm, said forest products industry price guide newsletter Madison’s Lumber Reporter. This is flat from the previous week when it was $383.

That week’s price is down -$47, or -11%, from one month ago when it was US$430 mfbm.

Compared to the same week last year, when it was US$360 mfbm, that week’s price is up +$23, or +6%. Compared to two years ago when it was $1,110, that week’s price is down by -$727, or -65%.

In the week ending May 10, 2024, the price of Southern Yellow Pine East Side 2×4 #2&Btr KD (RL) was US$340 mfbm. This is up +$10, or +3%, from the previous week when it was US$330 mfbm.

That week’s price is down -$18, or -5%, from one month ago when it was US$358 mfbm.

Madison’s Benchmark Top-Six Softwood Lumber and Panel Prices: Monthly Averages

Compared to the same week last year, when it was US$510 mfbm, that week’s price is down -$170, or -33%. Compared to two years ago when it was $825, that week’s price is down by -$485, or -59%.
