ACKA Praises Bipartisan U.S. Senate Letter Calling for Enforcement of Trade Laws at International Trade Commission
Today, the American Kitchen Cabinet Alliance (“AKCA”) is praising a bipartisan Senate letter signed by 25 current members of the U.S. Senate. In the letter addressed to Chairman David S. Johanson of the International Trade Commission (“ITC”), U.S. Senators highlight how China’s unfair trade practices in the kitchen cabinet industry threaten 250,000 American jobs.

Johanson which called on the ITC to “protect the American cabinet and vanity industry from alleged Chinese dumping of kitchen cabinets across the U.S. market” which can be read here. The Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters which is part of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America also submitted a letter to the ITC on behalf of American workers.
“We appreciate the Commission’s work on this issue and encourage the Commission to fairly enforce our trade laws,” the 25 U.S. senators write in the letter to Chairman Johanson. “Some estimates have found that the American cabinet industry has suffered $4 billion in harm as a result of China’s unfair trade practices. When foreign countries are allowed to take these actions, workers and their families right here at home are harmed.”
“At Showplace Cabinetry, an employee-owned company, we are greatly concerned about the threat posed by Chinese imports flooding the American kitchen cabinet market” remarked Bill Allen, President and Chief Operating Officer at Showplace Cabinetry. “This is not a Blue or Red issue – this is an American issue. We’re pleased so see a bipartisan group of distinguished U.S. Senators coming together to stand up for 250,000 American jobs.”
Led by Senators Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), the letter was signed by Senators. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Angus King (I-Maine), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), John Thune (R-S.D.), Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.).
The letter of support comes amid an ongoing case in front of the ITC filed by the AKCA. On March 6, 2019, the AKCA initiated one of the largest trade cases ever filed against another country in US history. In April 2019, the ITC issued an affirmative preliminary injury vote, an important first step in the long fight against China’s unfair trade practices in the cabinet industry.
With the ITC hearing approaching on 20 February 2020, AKCA leaders will continue to fight for American jobs. Working together we will create a level playing field for 250,000 workers and the great American kitchen cabinet industry.
